All of us want our homes and offices to be as appealing and personalized as possible, where we are able to feel a sense of belonging to them. This is what you can do: a personalized oil painting of yourself, you and your loved ones, or that of your favorite scenery!

However, as soon as you remove all the packaging materials, you realized that you are lost as to what to do after you had it up. How should you go about maintaining it? After all, good paintings are meant to last, if handled with proper care.

Here are some suggestions on how to care for your painting:

1. The very first step in maintaining your canvas painting is to frame it up. Frames act as cushion against any physical shocks and impacts. Frames can be purchase easily off the rack. You could also send it to a local framer as well. Be reminded not to frame your painting under a glass panel to avoid damaging the painting’s surface.

2. Avoid direct contact with the surface of the paintings. All handling should be done via the sides of the wooden frames.

3. Steer clear of areas with excessive heat, cold and humidity. These environmental factors will cause the canvas to turn moist, expand and shrink periodically hence inflicting damage to the painting.

4. Avoid placing your painting in extreme light of darkness. Extensive exposure to light causes the painting to fade away while being kept in darkness for too long will deepen the colour of the painting as well.

5. Do not leave the paintings near or on pointed objects. These sharp edges could inflict dents or cuts on your fine portraits, hence disfiguring them.

6. Apply a layer of varnish to the painted surface of your oil painting to serve as an extra layer of protection from the environment.

7. Dust your paintings occasionally to prevent dirt from accumulating. Use soft and clean brushes to brush the dirt off gently or a dry micro fibre cloth to lift these particles up. Alternatively, you can also employ a low power vacuum with a brush attachment.

8. If your oil painting has been badly damage, bring it to a professional cleaning and restoration service shop. The experts will reinstate the vibrancy of the painting which is lost. Although such services are relatively costly, to be able to get back a beautiful painting certainly outweighs the cost incurred.

In fact, caring for your prize paintings does require an additional effort. However, these steps are simple and realistic, anyone could achieve it! I’m sure that all of us would like to preserve our precious memories for as long as all we can and present this pride of ours to future generations.

Old Silver Dollars; The Bright Future Of American Silver Dollars

Ebay Results

American silver dollars have symbolised the United States’ wealth and power. For over two hundred years these large coins have meant financial strength and might. They have been collected by novice coin collectors as well as experienced collectors. They have a lasting beauty and a monetary worth besides.

Being able to be transported has led silver to be the preferred metal for coinage. Gold is too valuable to be in large circulation and copper or brass was too common. There has always been a trade in silver coins throughout history around the world. The silver dollars we know today were originally worth their face value, one United States dollar beginning right after the revolution, in the late 1770s. These were struck from hand engraved dies giving each coin a different look. This variation in design from coin to coin makes them unique and special to collectors.

Gold lost it’s value to silver soon after the early 1800s. Old silver dollars were being liquidated to trade for gold and gold coins. There was a stoppage of the minting of American silver dollars until this monetary crisis evened out. The price of silver dropped to more sane levels in 1835. At that time, the mint started to strike silver dollars once again. A new design was called for and the famous Liberty silver dollar made its appearance.

Christian Gobrecht designed the first seated Liberty silver dollar. This design proved to be so popular with all Americans that it soon appeared on almost all coins of that day. Seated Liberty silver dollars were replaced in 1878 by the Morgan silver dollar. Morgans were struck at such a high number, thanks to the silver strikes in the West, that there was soon a glut of silver and silver dollars, driving their value lower. The owners of the silver mines lobbied Washington to require every banknote in the country to be backed by silver to protect its worth. This led to the huge number of Morgan silver dollars circulating during the mid 1900s.

Their shear numbers has made the Morgan silver dollar the simplest American silver dollar to get hold of. So many of these were manufactured at five mints in the U.S. that the collector can find many variations and dates. The Morgan is the perfect silver dollar coin for a novice to collect.

For collectors today, the Internet has made coin collecting even easier than ever. With the click of a mouse, you can find uncirculated silver dollars, American silver eagle dollars and Eisenhower silver dollar values from many dealers’ sites. You can even buy them from another collector for yourself online. It is the best way for a novice or an experienced coin collector to essence their enjoyment and satisfaction of an appreciating investment when done right.

With the change in the world’s economy and silver’s rising value, there has never been a better time to buy American silver dollars and grow your collection for fun and profit.

You can receive more free tips about collecting and investing in Old Silver Dollars. There is great satisfaction in beginning a great coin collection ofAmerican Silver Dollars, and the money isn’t bad either.

Home Decor Collectibles: Determining Their Worth

Ebay Results

For many collectors who intend to sell their collection or just plain curious about how much their collectibles are worth, appraising the value of their collection is foremost before marketing them. There are several ways to know the monetary value such as the following:

The going rates for collections are based on aspects such as the origin of the good, manufacturer or producer, age and the place of transaction. For instance, wines are consistently in demand in Europe, particularly in countries like France and Italy where a good and classic wine is most appreciated. Drinking wine is practically a lifestyle. The value in selling wine, especially one that is of excellent quality, can be considerably higher as opposed to transacting in other regions where wine is not valued as much. Many wine collectors buy and sell in areas where there is high demand and recognition for their collection.

A further case is that of area rugs. There are an increasing number of rug collectors and the value of rugs is getting higher as well. If a collector has a rare or antique rug, the more he can gain from the appraisal. Rugs made in the earlier centuries and were preserved and passed down to this time are absolute collector’s items. Materials, designs and colors that are more elaborate cost much more too.

The availability of the item is a factor often looked at by private evaluators who compare it with those in the current market. The more in demand the goods are, the higher their estimated value is.

The condition or the quality of the item is crucial in determining its value. The more flaws there are, the more it loses its worth. For this reason, carefully examining an item you’re interested in during an auction is important. It can be such a good find in terms of its name and background, but if its quality has deteriorated, you are wasting your money and will not gain much either if you decide to sell it later on. A rug for instance, requires a check for cracks, rips and tear. Stains even the disguised ones should be looked out for. Any damage or imperfection means minus in digits.

Collections that are an authentic set or part of a set also demand a higher cost. The collector should be able to ascertain the value of his collection before selling off. If unsure, there are professional evaluators who can help assess the items know the right rates.

Ways To Make The Residence Look Beautiful By Using Asian Decorations

Ebay Results

For those who are interested in changing the look of their living space, Asian decor has been making a big hit in the design world. Asian art is the perfect accompaniment for the clean lines and austere style that is favored by a lot of people these days. Everyone will be familiar with futons and straw matting which is indicative of the kind of furnishing that most of us know. But these days the choice of other decorating pieces means that the home can take on a really sophisticated look without breaking the bank.

If the person starts off by painting all the rooms in a neutral color, this makes for a perfect backdrop for the homeowner to decide on what is next. For the table, for example, there are some wonderful wooden candle holders that are smart and yet rustic looking. Not only do they look neat and clean, they also give off a very romantic light which brings peace and tranquility. Also for the table are the wonderful dinner sets with oriental designs incorporated. Squared plates with bamboo or tree designs on them look great against a black ash dining room table. Even bottle covers are available in silk brocade made to look like a traditional outfit made specifically for the Japanese. The coolie hat is the cover for the bottle where the cork came out. To add some focal points, the range of oriental dolls, resplendent in wonderful silk brocades, make excellent adornments that will have everyone talking as they move around the room.

The garden does not get left out of this kind of renovation work. There are some magnificently decorated bamboo parasols that will bring a splash of color into the garden. The difference is though is that these parasols have superb designs to brighten up the outside space. A pair of flying cranes on a brilliant gold background is just one of the designs and would look great on a patio with little other decoration. There are hot air balloon spirals that also add some movement and spots of color for the garden and are loved by those who have bought them. There are also some designs of brass thermometers that can be placed at strategic places in the garden so that frost can be predicted on occasion.

Back in the house try decorating the walls with a lovely set of oriental face masks to add some color in an otherwise austere room. These wonderfully painted designs would look lovely down a stairway or grouped together in a dark niche with a spotlight trained on them. Perhaps set against a rich red or green background, these masks would surely look unusual and different. For brightening up dull corners, there are some elegant and simply designed lamps. These lamps have a plain but delightful flower design painted on the shade and on the base and will add just a touch of elegance to any room.

The idea, when decorating in the oriental style, is to keep everything as uncluttered as can be. There is no need to fill every space with bits and pieces as this will spoil the entire look that is being sought. Try searching on the internet for some innovative ideas before deciding on what is the best style to choose.

Connor R. Sullivan is very pleased with the Asian decor furnishings he and his wife chose online. He and his wife added several Asian art pieces to their family room. Click here to get your own unique version of this article with free reprint rights.

Ebay Results

Stumbling upon a wonderful piece of vintage jewelry is always an exciting achievement. By taking it to a jewelry appraiser, you’ll be able to learn if your find is actually valuable. Looking for estate jewelry is a good way to find these fashion gems; you may even discover that there are some great pieces hiding in your own family’s collection. Here are some tips on what to look for when hunting down estate jewelry that fits your style.

A popular find at an estate sale is the engagement ring. These rings can last for years, so even if you find one that was made in the 1920s, you will still be able to wear it with the original stones, or even add your own settings. Another option is to replace the stones or add a few extra ones to make your find more unique. Stones like rubies and emeralds were frequently used in these ring, and the three stone diamond ring is one of the most popular pieces. The sapphire wedding ring, which was popular in the 1940s and 1950s, is another piece of timeless jewelry.

Brooches are also part of the great finds that you’ll uncover when you search through estate jewelry. These decorative pins include precious stones, prized metals like gold or platinum, and pearls. There are so many fascinating designs of these brooches that you might want to start up a collection.

There are Victorian gold diamond brooches, as well as agate brooches that will look great with business suits as well as formal dresses. The dark, classic look of agate is sure to make the brooch stand out, and if antique jewelry is your thing, you’ll definitely want at least one piece like this.

Another favorite among estate jewelry pieces is the art deco brooch. Their vibrant colors and fascinating designs are perfect for a monotone ensemble.

Other estate jewelry you will come across consists of bracelets and bangles. Once again, the art deco era produced many interesting pieces, particularly the bracelets that featured diamonds and rubies. These items are worth thousands of dollars, and if you resell them, you can expect to get about $3000 for most bracelets that are made of mainly diamonds, or even more for bangles that are set with rubies or emeralds.

Why You Should Consider Collecting Ancient Roman Coins

Ebay Results

Ever wondered what Emperors like Constantine the Great, Cleopatra or Julius Caesar looked like and wanted to hold something in your hand that may have been held by one of these Emperors or someone living during that time.

If you are a collector with a low budget, particularly a coin collector then you should seriously consider taking up the hobby of Roman coin collecting.

I prefer collecting Roman coins for a number of reasons.

Unlike other ancient coins there are a wide variety of Ancient Roman coins featuring many different Roman emperors. This is due to the vast time and area that the Empire covered. Countless coins were made between the 1st and 5th century over a large area of the world which the Roman Empire covered and these coins reflect the location and period that they were minted.

Also its great to know what the Roman Emperors looked like. It was common practice during the time of the Roman Empire to inscribe the portrait of the Emperor on the coins that were minted during their reign.

Collecting Roman coins can be a cheap hobby unlike other ancient coins created by the Barbarians, Greeks, Indians and Chinese.

In fact they are less expensive to collect then many modern day coins which can come as a surprise to some. As already stated the Roman Empire was large and existed over a long period of time. Therefore there were a lot of Roman coins and so they are not as rare as some may believe. Also fewer people collect ancient coins then modern coins and so the demand for them is lower.

There are also less forgeries of Roman coins then other coins particularly modern day coins. This is largely due to the fact that they are less rare and expensive.

Another reason Roman coins are great to collect is that they do not just have historical value but also artistic value. These coins were cleverly and beautifully crafted and tell a story from the time and area that they were minted.

The currency in Ancient Rome had intrinsic value as their coins were made from precious metals such as Gold and Silver. This can make the coins more special to collect but you should make sure you have a higher enough budget before collecting the Gold coins as these are significantly more expensive.

Factors that determine a coins worth

The price of a Roman coin can vary radically and is due to a number of factors. The two most important factors are how the coin was minted and the condition that the coin is in.

The condition of a coin can depend on how corroded the coin has become while it has been in the ground or how it was stored.

The grade of the coin depends on the tools and experience of the person who minted the coin during the Roman period. These coins were made by hand and so are not always very well minted. They may be oval rather then circular and lack detail. This can happen if it was struck by dies that were worn down.

How you grade the coin can sometimes be problematic and sometimes you just have to estimate it based on how appealing or detailed you think the coin is to your own eyes

The third most important factor that determines the worth of a Roman coin is how rare that coin is. However rarity is less of a factor with Roman coins as it is with modern coins as Roman coins are so diverse and numerous.

Coin collectors are less likely to be competing for the same coin when trying to complete their Roman coin collection and each collection will be different. Also more people collect modern coins and so there is greater demand. Rare Roman coins do exist thanks to Emperors who had a short reign. Fewer coins would have been minted during their reign making them rarely and more expensive today.

You should be wary of coin dealers that use terms such as rare or very rare to describe a coin. A coin that is described as rare may not necessarily be rare. Some of those who are new to coin collecting will be misled by such claims. If someone describes a coin as rare you should determine how rare and why the coin is rare. Does the dealer of the coin give an RIC number and provide the range. Do not be tempted to purchase a coin just because someone describes it as rare.

If you become a professional coin dealer of have even just built up a collection of ancient coins determining whether a coin is rare or not will become much easier.

How much should you pay for a Roman Coin

Do not purchase a Roman coin if it is described as rare and being sold for less then $100 as it is unlikely to be rare. Rare coins will not sell for less then $100. Some eBay sellers will claim that their coin is rare and you will not see another like it for years yet you find the same coin on eBay sold by someone else.

To get an idea of the diversity in price for different Roman coins, for $5 to $10 you can buy good quality coins minted under late third and forth century AD emperors.

If you were willing to pay $10-$20, you could collect a coin from the more well-known 1st and 2nd century emperors. Maybe some later ones in good condition. If you were willing to accumulate a collection of over 50 emperors in good condition with clear portraits and readable legends this should cost approximately $20 a coin.

On top of this, there are numerous varieties available for each emperor. Of course, just as with modern coins, you can buy ones that cost much more; ones that are in better shape or are more scarce, but if you are just interested in decent coins and history then you may not have to look any further.

Why not occasionally purchase a more expensive and rare coin, or one of a high grade or condition made out of Gold or Silver. This could be very expensive but could be resold to a coin dealer for a good price. Some prefer cheaper coins that require some cleaning as it adds to the mystery and occasionally a rare and expensive coin can be found.

So, to summarize, buy coins that you find interesting and that appeal to you. No two coins of the same type will be exactly the same; choose the one that you think is better value for your money. Look around to see if a nicer looking coin might be also affordable if that is what you really want, and hence save yourself the trouble of replacing it later or regretting that you bought it in the first place. Do not worry about rarity too much!

Looking For Pearls And Antiques In Beijing

Authentic pearl shop in Beijing

The famous Pearl Market is very close to Beijing Haige International Hotel. Visitors from all over the world like to visit the Pearl Market for various items. When I visit a shop named Fanghua Pearl and Jewel, I was very impressed their beautiful, natural pearl necklaces. If you also want to give yourself a more elegant and noble look, don’t miss this shop.

When I entered the shop, I found myself surrounded by a sea of pearls. The colors mainly included milk white, golden yellow, pink, and black.

As the No.1 retailer of high-quality peals in Beijing, Fanghua has been in the business for twenty years. According to the shop manager, the main categories of pearls here are fresh water pearls, sea water pearls, and South Sea pearls.

Many people fear buying fake pearls. But Ms. Carries explained to me how to distinguish real pearls from fake ones. There’s a rule for distinguishing fine pearls: the rounder and shinier, the better.

I also noticed the photos on the wall showing foreign dignitaries who had visited the shop, including Putin’s wife, Margaret Thatcher, the Queen of Spain, and the Queen of Belgium. This is really an authentic pearl shop in Beijing!

An antique shop worth your visit

Near the Days Hotel & Suites Beijing, there is a shopping center named Chengtian Antique City. I found a shop that carried antiques, jade jewelry and other art.

Many antique porcelain wares were displayed in the shop: vases, bowls, and plates, just to name a few. Some of them were even made as early as the Qing dynasty.

Mr. Tang showed me a porcelain statue, Empress Dowager Cixi (1835 – 1908), a female ruler of the Qing dynasty. She sat on a stone bench with a big dog. She was wearing a big black hat and a button-down robe of yellow, red, and blue. Peonies and butterflies were embroidered on the robe. In China, the peony represents wealth and status.

Their jade items are also very popular, including the pendants and bracelets. They were white and looked glossy. Such items symbolize virtue in Chinese.

You can also find Chinese paintings, calligraphy, and wood carvings in this shop. They are all very good decorations for your room. So check it out on your way home to your Beijing hotel!
